Awards/Reviews

  • James Halliday Wine Companion 2011 Classic pea pod, nettle and tropical fruit bouquet; clean, fresh, vibrant and juicy, with chalky acidity providing texture and length. Screwcap. 13.5% alc. Rating 91 Drink 2012 Tasted Feb 10
  • Toni PatersonMW House & Garden September 09 “A fresh and grassy new-vintage semillon with fabulous intensity and balance.  Try serving this with freshly shucked Pacific oysters.”
  • Winewise The Consumers Wine Guide - Very much in the classic herbaceous Margaret River style. The palate is ripe but racy. Good drinking.  Recommended
  • Martin Field E-Vine - Pale straw hues. Generous nose of lemons, grassiness and young pineapple. Fuller bodied style of this varietal with a long palate of lychees and lemons and herbaceousness. Medium citric acidity adds weight to the finish.  First Rate.

2009 Vintage by Jeff Moss

Vintage is about grapes and wine and these are dependent on the weather and a quick reference to the build up to vintage revealed erratic weather. Spring was drier and cooler than the same period in 2008 and this pattern continued through until our harvest began on 2/03/09.

Our vintage was compressed into five short weeks beginning on the 2/03 with Chardonnay and ending after a week’s break on the 15/04 with Grenache.

Once again yields were excellent from the stand point of flavour in whites and both flavour and intensity of colour in the reds and Nav our wine maker was delighted with the ripe luscious fruit delivered to the winery... A wine makers dream comes true.

This vintage several modifications were made with much more “hands free” movement of fruit through the various processes in the winery. This reduced labour has resulted in wines with a finer structure than hitherto and marks a significant step up in quality terms. 2009 marks the 61st vintage since my wine odyssey began. As with Greek mythology we still seek the Golden Fleece however in lieu of this mythical prize we have enjoyed an abundance of Golden Moments.

Wine Makers Notes

Clear settled juice was inoculated with X5 and QA23 yeast, which helped develop the fresh and aromatic style of Moss Brothers Semillon. The wine was 10% barrel fermented and towards the end of the ferment the barrels and tanks were lees stirred which enhanced roundness and mouthfeel of the wine. Once the lees had imparted the desired character and richness the wine was sulphured and different batches were blended prior to bottling to reveal the style of semillon produced by Moss Brothers.

Tasting Notes

Colour: Pale golden straw with green highlights.
Bouquet: Aromatic with lime, cut grass and smoky mineral tones.
Palate: Lifted and juicy lime with complex layering of cutgrass, river-stone and cinnamon characteristics.  Rich and seamless with balanced flavours and good zesty finish.
