2005 /
Margaret River
Moss
Brothers was established by the Moss family in 1984 and is one of
the oldest family owned wineries in the region. The Wilyabrup
sub-region has established sub-regionality with cabernet sauvignon
and cabernet sauvignon dominant blends - the region is known to
produce these wines with exceptional quality.
This
blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot and cabernet franc produces a
wine that can be enjoyed now or over the next ten years.
Reviews
•
Campbell Mattinson Winefront 91 points “Lovely cabernet,
chocolaty, gravelly, full of smooth flavour and roundly satisfying
through the finish. There’s a gently herbal, almost bitter
character running through the aftertaste but it smells great and is
beautiful through the mid palate. Was looking for a ‘real red’ to
drink recently and this performed the role nicely. Drink

•
Ray Jordan “Very promising - silky smooth and sinewy with
excellent body and structure. A very elegant and stylish
wine.
•
James Halliday “Pleasing medium bodied wine, with cassis and
blackcurrant fruit, which has retained freshness.”

Vintage
2004
Spring provided another gentle start to the growing season, weather
patterns, which historically have brought serious events to the
region, had moved further south. This resulted in calm and
mild conditions through bud burst, flowering and
setting.
Rainfall
was almost absent through to March, however, our vines now mostly
20 years old, stood up marvelously well, providing the wine makers
with well balanced mature and sound fruit.
Mid
March saw a significant district-wide rain, which delayed harvest
of the remaining whites and of course the reds for some 10
days. In our case semillon and shiraz were marginally
affected however both varieties went on to produce outstanding
young wines.
In
the whites intense flavour and pungent bouquet - the reds a bit
early to say but if intense colour, fine tannins and rich fruit
flavours which can only be obtained from fully ripened grapes is an
indication, David and his team have some outstanding wines in the
cellar.

Makers Notes
The
grapes were picked after achieving ripe fruit flavours in the last
week of March. In the winery the grapes were crushed,
de-stemmed and pumped into red wine fermenters. Yeast was
selected to maximise the quality of the vintage. After
fermentation, the wine was aged in new and seasoned, French oak.
When the oak aging process was complete, blending trials were
conducted to establish the best blend of the three
components. It was decided to include small proportions of
merlot and cabernet franc in the blend to slightly soften the
tannin structure of the cabernet sauvignon component. This has
added an elegant dimension to the 2003
blend.

Tasting
Notes
Colour:
Garnet red.
Bouquet:
Black berries and violets combine with smoky, mocha oak
aromas.
Palate:
Rich with black and red berry fruits. The fruit is balanced by
earthy, smoky oak and a defined supple tannin structure. This is a
full-bodied red with all the hallmarks of a Margaret River cabernet
sauvignon, merlot, and cabernet franc blend.
